Velutta’s First Whisper — A Memoir of Softness

VELUTTA - I
This will be a series of blog posts about how Velutta came to be. From the first thought, which is this post here to the fragrances to the her final destination.
I never meant to tell anyone. Years ago, I stood at my kitchen counter with a hand mixer and a few butters—no grand plan, no brand vision. Just softness in a jar. And honestly? That was enough. I didn’t worry about melting formulas or fancy packaging. I had air conditioning and a quiet ritual of reapplying comfort throughout the day.
One person here, one person there would notice. They’d glance at the little jar in my hand, curiosity flickering in their eyes. Sometimes they’d lean in, almost asking, but not quite. And every time I dipped my fingers in to reapply softness to my arms or hands, it felt like a whispered reminder to myself: “I see you. I love you too.”
Fast forward to the moment I realized this wasn’t just my private playlist anymore. You know the kind—those YouTube playlists we keep tucked away, full of songs that feel like home. Velutta was becoming that kind of softness. And I knew it was time to share her.
I wasn’t ready to ship worldwide. I didn’t want melting jars to discredit the goodness inside. Lotions? Sure, they’re lovely. But they’re lighter, faster, more fleeting. I wanted something creamier. Heavier. A formula that looked perky in a jar, like a butter—but wasn’t one.
Cue my analytical brain, the one I’m married to for better or worse. It started asking questions like: “If I add water to stabilize the melting point of butters… isn’t that technically a lotion?” I know, I know—maybe too technical. But it’s true, right?
So I set out to create a lotion that felt like a butter. One that took its time to absorb. One that held its shape, shined just enough, and whispered softness with every scoop. I tweaked percentages. Swapped ingredients. Failed beautifully. And then— She happened.
I piped her into the jar. She held her peak. I couldn’t even put the lid on. That photo? It’s still on my socials. I love it. I placed her inside a lidded container and waited until morning. And when I scooped that peak with my fingers (yes, it hurt a little), she spread like silk. Sat on my skin. Said goodbye with softness. “See you next time.”
That’s when I knew—this playlist couldn’t stay private. Velutta was ready to be shared. And while her name story is for another time… this was her first whisper.
Til next time, friends. 🤍
