Why Your Skin Is Grumpy Right Now (And How to Fix It)
We’ve all been there: the temperature drops, the heater clicks on, and suddenly your face feels two sizes too small.
Winter is notoriously tough on our skin. Between the biting outdoor wind and the bone-dry indoor heat, our skin barrier takes a beating, leaving us with redness, flakes, and that uncomfortable "winter itch." But don't worry—you don't need a 20-step routine to survive the season. You just need to work smarter, not harder.
Here are five simple swaps to keep your glow alive until spring.
1. Ditch the "Squeaky Clean" Feeling
If your face feels tight after washing, your cleanser is doing too much. In the summer, foaming gels are great for sweat, but in winter, they strip away the precious oils you need.
The Swap: Switch to a cleansing balm or a milky cream cleanser. Your skin should feel soft—not tight—the moment you pat it dry.
2. Layer Like a Pro
You wouldn't go outside in just a heavy parka with nothing underneath, right? Your skincare should follow the same logic.
-
The Base Layer: Apply a Hyaluronic Acid serum while your skin is still slightly damp.
-
The Outerwear: Seal it in with a rich moisturizer containing Ceramides. Ceramides act like the "mortar" between your skin cell "bricks," keeping the hydration from escaping.
3. The "Invisible" Winter Sun
This is the one everyone forgets: SPF is non-negotiable. Even if it’s gray and gloomy, UVA rays (the ones responsible for aging) are still reaching your skin. And if you’re heading to the ski slopes? Snow reflects nearly 80% of UV radiation, giving you a double dose of sun exposure.
4. Easy on the Acids
We all love the glow that comes from exfoliating, but overdoing it in winter is a recipe for disaster. When the air is dry, your skin barrier is already fragile.
-
The Rule: Dial back your retinoids or exfoliating acids to once or twice a week.
-
The Pro-Tip: Switch to Lactic Acid—everybody's skin is different, and for a lot of people, it’s a gentler exfoliant that actually helps the skin hold onto water.
5. Hack Your Environment
Sometimes the best skincare isn't a cream at all. If you wake up with a dry throat and parched skin, your heater is the culprit.
-
The Fix: Get a humidifier for your bedroom. Adding moisture back into the air prevents "Trans-Epidermal Water Loss" while you sleep. It could be the little action that will make a difference in you waking up looking much more refreshed.
So for the Winter Cheat Sheet
1) Trade scalding hot showers for lukewarm water (your skin barrier will thank you!)
2) Switch you lightweight Summer lotions for a thicker, buttery, creamier balm. It will feel indulging!
3) Gentle liquid exfoliants instead of the usual harsher face scrubs.
